Since the Trump administration's changes to the Clean Water Act last year removed federal protections from many wetlands, anti-environment lawmakers in Indiana have been trying to strip the existing state protections as well. Senate bill SB389, the legislation which paves the way for more wetlands to be developed, has passed out of committee and at some point in the near future will receive a floor vote.
We urge all of our fellow Hoosiers to oppose this bill, and to let your state senator know that you expect them to vote against it! In addition to being beautiful natural spaces, wetlands help control flooding, clean groundwater, and support abundant plants and wildlife. It's estimated that we've already removed 85% of the wetlands that once existed in Indiana. We must protect the wetlands we still have. To help spread the word, we created a poster design which we encourage you to share! This design features a prothonotary warbler, a gorgeous species which forages for food in wetlands. Please feel free to download these images and share on your social media. We made a tall "poster" format version as well as a square version which would be easier to share on Instagram! Feel free to tag us when you post it.
